OUR STORY
HOOPIN’ FOR THE HEALTH OF IT® was born out of the necessity for me to fit into a dress for my daughter’s wedding, June 2, 2007. I started hoopin’ April 3rd & accomplished that goal.  No one told me of the transformation my body would make by hoopin’.  Friends started noticing the change in me & asked what I was doing (I had my first “six pack” at 46 years old). I told them I was hoopin’ and they immediately wanted in on it.  I actually told several that I was hoopin’ for the health of it, hence the name of this business.
You have to understand something and this is as good a place to put it in.  I do not like to exercise and never did.  My motto used to be “I don’t like to do anything that makes me sweat!” I’m not a runner, biker, swimmer, yoga-er, worker outer, etc.  I do enjoy Contra and English Country dance though.  But, when I’m dancing in my hoop and have music on…it’s all I can do sometimes to teach my class because I get lost in my own little world of “hoopforia™”.
I had originally tried my neighbor’s hoop that she had bought from a woman’s fitness center here in town.  Oh my gosh, it hurt sooo badly!  Never had I felt such self-inflicted pain before!  The hoop was weighted and had scalloped bumps on the inside (supposedly to break down your cellulite).  Then I found a woman in town that made hoops and I bought one of hers and started using it.  It was better than the scalloped hoop, but still hurt.  I bought several on line...ouch, ouch, ouch. This would be a good time to mention that I don’t have a high tolerance for pain.
My husband & I started working with different materials to design a hoop that didn’t hurt me.  Finally, something that felt good, actually it felt great.   I tell folks it’s like hoopin’ with a sofa cushion.  Everyone that tried our hoops loved them. Our hoops are weighted, only because of what they are made of.  We don’t put stuff in them to weight them. Doctors are not liking the heavier hoops that are being sold out there. We began making hoops for our friends.  Now that they had hoops, they didn’t know what to do with them.  They asked me if I’d show them how to hoop.  Sure I said, but one big problem, I didn’t know much, (I couldn’t even keep it on my hips at this point) but was willing to share what I could do. I bought various DVDs on hoopin’ and learned some moves and came up with many of our own.  My friend Renee’ Stevens was my inspiration and together we started our first HOOPERCISE® class June 18, 2007.  We taught what we knew and kept on learning and are still learning today.
GROUP EFFORT
God surely deserves the credit in our story for He has blessed this endeavor every step of the way.  From my husband Rod who loves me unconditionally and sacrifices so much of his time to support this and manufacture the hoops to Renee’ (my Ed McMahon) co-instructor, co-hoop designer who helps me with every little detail of this business.  She is my kindred sister in Christ.  To Carron, my teachable spirited friend that is always there for me, no matter the need, and keeps me real. Ellen Jo, who tirelessly helps me with design. The entrepreneurial team from John Fitzpatrick’s class at NMC that gave me much needed criticism.  My awesome friend Sarah Jane that lets us use her front lawn of By Candlelight Amish Furnishings and let’s me pick her business brain. My business think tank of women called “WOMEN of WONDER”. I take that as I wonder what I am doing!” The folks at Thompson Pharmacy that sell our hoops in their front window. I can’t name them all, but there are many and I mean many dear students that we have met through our demonstrations and classes at Beledi, Fitness Factor, and our church that we now call friends. Everyone is supportive of this creation and it has morphed into what it is because of all who have released that inner child and gave it permission to come out and play.  For the first time in my life, I truly feel that I am where God wants me.  Life is about relationships and how we invest in them.  I love where I am today.
